Woodworking Workshops
We are delighted to introduce our new woodworking sessions for our Preschool School Leavers at Home from Home from November 2026. This exciting new opportunity will allow children to explore the world of woodworking, develop practical skills and discover the satisfaction of making things using real tools and materials.
Woodwork has a long history in early childhood education, dating right back to the beginnings of early childhood education with Froebel’s Kindergarten in Germany back in the 1800s. Since then it has been embraced by many countries all over the world.
The benefits of woodworking
Woodworking offers a wealth of learning opportunities for young children. It supports the development of fine and gross motor skills, hand-eye coordination, concentration and problem-solving. Children will have opportunities to express their creativity, make independent choices, develop resilience and build confidence as they explore materials and learn new skills.
The sessions will also support important areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), including physical development, communication and language, mathematics, expressive arts and design, and personal, social and emotional development.
How the sessions will work
The programme will run over six weeks, with children working in small groups of six, supported by two adults. This allows us to provide individual guidance, encourage children to work at their own pace and help them develop confidence in using the tools.
Age-appropriate equipment and safety
We have made a significant investment in our woodworking provision, including a dedicated woodworking bench and a range of child-sized tools, such as hammers.
Although appropriately sized for young children, these are all real tools that serve a genuine purpose. Children will be introduced to each tool carefully and taught how to use it safely and responsibly, with close adult supervision throughout.
The Workshop Process
Children will be free to decide what they would like to make, with adults supporting their ideas and helping them overcome challenges along the way.
Our focus will be on the process rather than the finished product. We want children to enjoy experimenting, exploring possibilities, making mistakes, trying again and taking pride in their own achievements, rather than feeling that they need to produce something perfect.
We are very excited to offer this new experience to our School Leavers and look forward to seeing their confidence, creativity and practical skills grow as they explore this wonderful learning opportunity.
